2021.12.03 16:04 RusticBohemian When and why did biographers switch from teaching their audience using the example of historical figures to the more removed, objective, fact-based biographies of the modern era? Is this an entirely positive change, and has anything worthwhile been lost?

"It is not histories I'm writing, but lives..." — Plutarch
Beginning at least as far back as Plutarch, most biographers wrote to instruct readers on how to live, or achieve virtue, or perhaps in appreciation of what someone achieved.
When Xenophon tells us about Cyrus the Great's conquest of the Neo-Babylonian Empire in the Cyropaedia, I find it interesting, entertaining, and perhaps containing some truth about the right way to act, but I wonder if anyone believed its veracity, even in antiquity. It seems clearly meant to be instructive.
Jumping forward to recent times, there are some remaining vestiges of the approach present in the 20th century.
I recently read "Scipio Africanus: Greater Than Napoleon," by B. H. Liddell Hart, which was published in 1927. Liddel Hart asserts that Scipio was "greater," than Alexander the Great, Caesar, or Napoleon, both on the battlefield and as a virtuous man. It's clear that he's not just presenting the facts. He has an opinion about Scipio he wants you to buy into.
I'm not sure I was totally convinced, particularly given the scarcity of contemporary accounts and archeological evidence, and that "greater," is subjective, but it certainly made for an entertaining read, and I thought about it more than 90% of the biographies I've read.
I feel like there have been few or no "fawning," accounts of historical figures in the last 20 years, or ones that even attempt to use the lives of their subjects to teach us something or appreciate accomplishments.
Some are straight-down-the-middle recitations of facts. But if anything, I find most modern biographies to skew somewhat toward the negative. It's like biographers decide to write about figures they have a problem with and wan't to get people to see their flaws.
For instance, I've read "Marcus Aurelius: A Life," by Frank McLynn.
On one hand, the scholarship was excellent. It was a dense book filled with interesting facts and background information that changed my perspective in a number of ways. But for large segments of the book, McLynn has an axe to grind with his subject. He even has lengthy passages where he attempts to assert that Stoicism, Marcus's philosophy, is misguided and made Marcus a worse person.
These segments were so poorly done that it made me question the scholarship of the rest of the book, which I largely found worthwhile.
Getting to the point:
Perhaps I'm asking the wrong group, since historians are less interested in learning from historical figures or using them to better ourselves than they are in objective understanding.
But it seems to me that something worthwhile from the older tradition has been lost in all this.
I think we can agree that insisting on historical accuracy is a big step forward. But what exactly are we gaining by putting so much emphasis on the flaws of these figures? We all have them, and they should be pointed out to reduce the risk of hero worship.
But even flawed figures have virtues that can teach us a lot, and that seems rarely acknowledged anymore.
So I'll repeat my questions from the title:
When and why did this happen? Were the "lessons," considered misguided?
Did we lose anything worthwhile when biographies became less sympathetic?

2021.12.03 16:04 M0xie222 What can cause pallet count to go lower over 3 months? Anemia Lab results posted.

29F 5’5” no drinking/smoking/drugs/meds
I’m anemic and iron deficient. My palettes have never been out of range but are slowly declining and I’m curious if that’s okay/normal?
In September my palettes at 350 It’s gone lower and lower since then It’s now at 221 (dec 2021) (Range 130-450)
I will post more labs Side note: I received iron infusion 11/18
Hemoglobin before infusion: 10.6 After infusion:11.3 (Range 12-16)
Most recent labs 12/03 (today) RDW has been high since September
RDW-CV Your Value 18.9 % Standard Range 11.0 - 14.5 % Flag H
RDW-SD Your Value 57.9 fL Standard Range 36.4 - 46.3 fL Flag H
Hematocrit Your Value 36.1 % Standard Range 36.0 - 48.0 %

WBC Your Value 6.5 10³/uL Standard Range
RBC Your Value 4.31 10ˆ6/uL Standard Range 3.50 - 5.40 10ˆ6/uL
I realize my blood work isn’t extremely concerning but I have been pretty healthy my entire life so seeing slight declines over 3 months makes me wonder what could be going on. The iron infusion has helped a bit but my numbers are still not in normal range or barley passing by..
I have a follow up with hematologist on Tuesday.. is there anything I should ask?
Thank you!

2021.12.03 16:04 Blackbyrn WTW for when you keep saying something radical (politically speaking) until the shock wares off and it seems reasonable?

This is a strategy used in communications when someone wants to propose something that seems farfetched, essentially they just keep talking about it until it seems reasonable or practical.
